2017 GLA Scholarship Winners

The GLA Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 2017 winners of the Beard and Hubbard scholarships. These two awards are given annually by GLA to provide financial assistance for students pursuing a Master’s degree in library science.

Heather Smith - Beard Scholarship Winner:
Heather Smith is originally from Murray County, Georgia, and currently lives in Hall County. Heather received a Bachelor of the Arts in English from the University of Georgia in 2014, and went into her first library job for Gwinnett County Public Library System immediately following her graduation. As a library associate, Heather has had the opportunity to offer customer service and to experience the many facets of public librarianship. Heather has been on many system teams and has helped lead many system initiatives, including leading new hire training,
 developing a new employee evaluation system, and implementing a new service model without service desks. Currently pursuing her MLIS online from Valdosta State University, Heather is eager to continue expanding her knowledge of library services both through her degree and through her professional experiences.

Heather wrote: “One of my favorite things about working in a public library is the ever-changing nature of the job. Technological advances and changes in customer services are never-ending, but a focus on community also ensures that libraries will be constantly adapting their resources to fit their users’ needs. I am passionate about providing patrons with services that are relevant to them, and I feel strongly about catering to the specific needs of library communities. I am thankful and honored to be the recipient of the Hubbard scholarship, and I look forward to continuing to push myself to learn and grow as a library professional.”

Amanda Roper - Hubbard Scholarship Winner:
Amanda Roper is the Resource Sharing and Library Communications Specialist at Brenau University. She has a B.A. in English Literature from Brenau and has worked for the library for 13 years. Amanda is a member of the Georgia Library Association Marketing and Branding committee and is the vice-chair of the Paraprofessional Division. Amanda is a student at Valdosta State University's MLIS program and is focusing on library communications and information literacy instruction. She currently lives in Gainesville, Ga with her husband and three children. Amanda enjoys reading, blogging about books, consuming mass quantities of coffee and finds there is no greater pleasure than writing with a nice pen in a notebook.

Amanda wrote: “After graduating with my MLIS, I plan on continuing to serve college communities in academic libraries by pursuing a career that involves reference, instruction, library communications, and student outreach and engagement. I plan to focus on critical library pedagogy to empower students to seek, critically assess, and contextualize information. I'd also love to continue to advocate for social justice and equity in library collections, services, and programs. I'm excited to work with my library colleagues to bring the libraries to the people by encouraging accessibility, quelling library anxiety, and meeting patrons at the intersections of their life experiences."

Recipients of both awards must agree to work for at least one year in Georgia following graduation. Applicants need not be residents of Georgia to apply.

The deadline to apply for the 2017 scholarships is May 19.

GLA Scholarship Winners 2016

The GLA Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 2016 winners of the Beard and Hubbard scholarships. These two awards are given annually by GLA to provide financial assistance for students pursuing a Master’s degree in library science.

This year’s C.S. Hubbard scholarship winner is Katie Mitchell.  Katie graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Psychology and the University of West Georgia with an M.Ed. in School Library Media.  She has worked in various library environments, including academic, public, and private libraries, and now serves as the Branch Manager at the Neva Lomason Memorial Library, part of the West Georgia Regional Library System.  Katie is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science at Valdosta State University.

Anne Marie McLean is this year’s Charles Beard Scholarship winner.  She graduated from Emory & Henry College in Virginia with a B.A. in Political Science and Religion, and went on to receive her Masters of Theological Studies at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.  Anne Marie currently serves as the Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Specialist at the Pitts Theology Library at Emory and is pursuing her Masters of Library and Information Science at the University of Alabama.

Libraries Are Such a Drag! A 2016 Calendar Fundraiser for the Beard Scholarship

If you love libraries like we love libraries then get yourself, your family and your coworkers a new 2016 Libraries Are Such a Drag calendar to kick off the New Year.
All proceeds are donated to the Beard Scholarship for library school students in Georgia. The Beard Scholarship is made possible by friends and colleagues of the late Charles Edward Beard who served libraries and the library profession for almost 40 years. The scholarship provides financial assistance toward completing a Master's degree in library science for candidates who show strong potential to inspire and motivate their peers in the
profession and in professional associations.

Each month of this fun calendar has an image of a library patron posing in book drag with
their favorite book and sharing why they love the library. The calendar runs from January
2016 to May of 2017.

Oscar Gittemeier currently works as a youth services librarian in Atlanta. He is a former Beard Scholarship recipient and Florida State University MLIS grad. When not creating calendars you can find Oscar hiking with his labradane Jasper, sipping bourbon at a dive bar, or searching for the world’s greatest French toast.

GLA Scholarship Winners 2015

The GLA scholarship committee is pleased to announce the 2015 winners of the Beard and Hubbard scholarships.  These two awards are given annually by GLA to provide financial assistance for students pursuing a master’s degree in library and information science.

Karen Manning – Beard Scholarship winner:

Karen Manning has progressive experience working in libraries in a variety of public service, technical and administration roles. Currently, Karen assist with the development, implementation, managing and maintenance of digital collections for institutional repositories.

Karen wrote: "Being a recipient of the Beard Scholarship is a great honor that will assist with gaining my educational goals. Receiving this generous support, will lighten my financial burden and allow me to focus more on my studies. It has motivated me to succeed and inspired me to help others in their educational endeavors. I am passionate about the library profession and the Beard Scholarship will help toward achieving a lifelong goal of becoming a librarian. After graduating, I plan to pursue a career as a Digital Scholarship Librarian."

Rebecca Ballard – Hubbard Scholarship winner:

Rebecca Ballard is from Athens, Georgia and is an honor graduate from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Costume Design. She began working part-time in the Athens Regional Library System in 2005 while working at UGA. Rebecca discovered a passion for librarianship and moved full-time to the Children's Department as quickly as she could, and she enjoys creating new programming that combines literature with music and other creative arts. She is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Library and Information Science at Valdosta State University and plans to continue her work in Youth Services, developing innovative new programming, and teaching workshops to encourage lifelong learning.

GLA Scholarship Winners 2014

The GLA scholarship committee is pleased to announce the 2014 winners of the Beard and Hubbard scholarships.  These two awards are given annually by GLA to provide financial assistance for students pursuing a master’s degree in library and information science.

This year’s C. S. Hubbard scholarship winner is Ann Marie Davis.  Ann is originally from Jackson, Georgia and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in anthropology from Berry College. She worked in the Berry College Memorial Library all four years of college which lead to a career path in librarianship. Ann will complete her Master of Information Science degree at the University of Tennessee in the Fall semester of 2014. She currently lives in Snellville, Georgia with her husband and works full time at Georgia State University Library as the Stacks Supervisor. Ann aspires to work as an academic librarian in cataloging or technical services. 

Michael Kennedy is this year’s Charles Beard Scholarship winner. He is an honor graduate from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. For the past two years, he has worked in the Lee County Public Library System in Leesburg, Georgia as a Library Assistant. His professional passions include adult programming, community outreach, literary research, and collection development and marketing. He desires to take on leadership roles in a public library and further his experience with information literacy. He is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science degree from Valdosta State University, and looks forward to bringing emerging and cutting edge ideas in librarianship to South Georgia and other rural areas.

2013 GLA Scholarship Winners

The GLA scholarship committee is pleased to announce the 2013 winners of the Beard and Hubbard scholarships.  These two awards are given annually by GLA to provide financial assistance for students pursuing a Master’s degree in library science.

This year’s C.S. Hubbard scholarship winner is Asele Mack.  Originally from Russia, she holds a degree in journalism from Moscow State University. She has worked as a writer, translator, non-profit manager, and most recently as a mother of two children. Throughout her career – from writer to mother – libraries have been an essential resource and a second home, so it is only natural that she finally found her true calling in librarianship. After several years of volunteering in public libraries in Florida and Georgia, Asele made a leap of faith and started the MLIS program at Valdosta State University. She now works part time at the DeKalb Public Library. After graduation, Asele plans to become a public librarian and specialize in services for non-English speakers and programming that helps bridge the information and digital divide.

John Mack Freeman is this year’s Charles Beard Scholarship winner. He has a dual BA in English and Theatre from Shorter College.  In addition to being an AmeriCorps alum, Mack has worked in web design, marketing, and content development for the last four years.  He is currently pursuing a Master's of Library and Information Science at Valdosta State University, and he looks forward to beginning his career in librarianship when he graduates in December 2013.  He is currently employed at the Tifton-Tift County Public Library. After graduation, he is interested in public librarianship with an emphasis on marketing, outreach to underserved communities, and government engagement.

2012 Beard & Hubbard Scholarship Recipients

The GLA scholarship committee is pleased to announce the 2012 winners of the Beard and Hubbard scholarships.  These awards are given annually by GLA to provide financial assistance for students pursuing a Master’s degree in library science.

This year’s C.S. Hubbard scholarship winner is John Stephens.  Originally from North Carolina, John completed a B.S. in Psychology and a B.A. in German at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He got his first job in a library at the University of Georgia while pursuing a graduate degree in German.  John will begin work on a Master’s in Library and Information Science at the University of North Texas this fall.  He is currently employed at Mercer University as an Interlibrary Loan Coordinator.  After graduation he is interested in academic librarianship in access services, reference, or systems.

Linda Cooks is this year’s Charles Beard Scholarship winner. She has a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California Northridge and a Master’s degree in Heritage Preservation from Georgia State University.  Linda has worked in real estate appraisal and cultural resource management for over 20 years.  She has a special interest in the social and cultural history of communities, architectural history, and heritage education.  She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Valdosta State University and looks forward to a new career in either academic librarianship or archival and records management.

GLA Scholarship Application Deadline, May 21!

Library school students, get those applications in for the Beard and Hubbard Scholarships! The scholarships provide $1,000 and $3,000, respectively, and the deadline to apply for these wonderful opportunities is May 21, 2011.

The Scholarship Committee will review all complete applications received by the deadline. Selection will be based on the application and supporting documents. Other considerations being equal, residents of Georgia will be given preference. Applicants will be considered for both awards by the committee and will be notified of the decision no later than June 15, 2011.

Hubbard and Beard Scholarship Winners

The GLA Scholarship Committee is very pleased to announce the 2010 winners of the Hubbard and Beard Scholarships:

The Charles Beard Scholarship is awarded this year to Holly Phillips, who has served in different capacities providing outreach, including bookmobile clerk and branch manager, for the Moultrie-Colquitt County Library. Holly is attending Valdosta State University for her MLS.

And, this year's C.W. Hubbard Scholarship recipient is Bonnie Moore. Bonnie has been a Library Technical Assistant at Georgia Northwestern Technical College for 10 years and is also working on her MLS at Valdosta State.

Charles Beard Lecture @ University of West Georgia February 9, 2010

Dr. Toby Graham, director of the Digital Library of Georgia, will present The Civil Rights Digital Library: Documenting America’s Struggle for Racial Equality on Tuesday, February 9, at 11:00 a.m., at Ingram Library, University of West Georgia, Carrollton. Dr. Graham’s presentation is the 2010 Charles Beard Lecture. The event is free and open to the public, and will mark the last Beard Lecture to be held in Ingram Library prior to a major renovation scheduled to begin March 1, 2010.

The Charles Beard Lecture series, created in 2007, honors the late Charles E. Beard, who served as Director of University Libraries at the University of West Georgia from 1978 to 2004. Over the course of his twenty-six year tenure at West Georgia, Beard led Ingram Library through a period of rapid technological change. His influence extended beyond West Georgia, as well, as he was instrumental in creating and extending access to GALILEO to all libraries and educational institutions in Georgia. GALILEO, a web-based initiative that was one of the first of its kind, now includes the Civil Rights Digital Library.

The Civil Rights Digital Library (CRDL) built by the Digital Library of Georgia and its partners, is an online archive of historical news film from the Civil Rights era and a virtual library portal of national scope. It is the most ambitious and comprehensive initiative to date to deliver educational content on the Civil Rights Movement via the Web. The CRDL features thirty hours of news film, along with related archival holdings and instructional materials from 100 institutions across the U.S., including oral histories, letters, diaries, FBI files, and photographs. http://crdl.usg.edu/

The CRDL, a GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online (GALILEO) initiative based at the University of Georgia Libraries, was funded in part by a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute for Museum and Library Services. This innovative effort to make documentation on the Civil Rights Movement widely available was the subject of a nationally televised documentary produced by Ambassador Andrew Young that aired in January 2009.
