AEL Formal Mingle: You’ve Got Options: Working as a Special Librarian

GLA's Atlanta Emerging Librarians are hosting their first formal mingle of 2017! Learn about special libraries and what it takes to be a special librarian. Our presenters will talk about their organizations and their roles as special librarians. Resources will be shared, skills will be discussed, and participants will even have an opportunity to try out some of the technology used by these special libraries!
Join us at 11:30am to tour the library where we will be hosting this event! The Metropolitan Library has received a number of awards to date, one of which was from the Georgia Public Library Service as the Metropolitan Library was named one of the 10 Most Beautiful Libraries in Georgia in April 2017.
Participants can receive up 2.0 hours of continuing education credit for attending, awarded by Georgia Library Association’s Atlanta Emerging Librarians and the Georgia Libraries for Accessible Statewide Services.
Tickets are not required, but if you plan on stopping by, please RSVP, so we can get a rough headcount. Refreshments will be served.

Presenter Bios:

Stephanie Irvin is an Outreach Librarian for the Georgia Libraries for Accessible Statewide Services (GLASS), Georgia's talking book and braille library. She’s also its webmaster, newsletter editor and go-to source for information on document and web accessibility. Prior to that, she worked 6 years in public libraries.

Christine Willis, MLIS, is the Director of Knowledge Management & Learning Resources at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA. She oversees the Noble Learning Resource Center and provides research assistance to clinicians as well as consumer health information for patients and families. Her research interests include health literacy, library services for people with disabilities, and teaching clinicians how to access and assess evidence based research to be applied in their practice. She has been published in multiple journals and presented on each of these topics at regional and national conferences.

Atlanta Emerging Librarians Summer Special Library Tours on August 7, 2015

Looking for a unique career path to pursue with your MLIS?  Special libraries are an interesting alternative to traditional academic, public, or school libraries.  Special libraries can be found at law firms, corporations, museums, hospitals, and non-profit organizations, among other places.  If you’re interested in working for a special library or just want to know what all the fuss is about, please join us for a very “special” afternoon on Friday, August 7th as we tour the Emory University Law Library and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Library. 

Hugh F. MacMillan Emory University Law Library Tour - The mission of the MacMillan Library is to support fully the scholarly pursuits of the faculty and students of the Emory University College of Law.  To fulfill its mission, the Law Library offers an active program of legal research instruction, an experienced and helpful staff, and extensive collections of law and law-related information.  This tour will be led by Elizabeth Christian, Emory law librarian and former intellectual property law attorney.

Stephen B. Thacker CDC Library Tour - The Stephen B. Thacker CDC Library’s (CDC Library) mission is to advance science, public health and safety through information. The library provides a full range of information services and products in support of public health research, policy and action. Through the headquarters library in Atlanta and its six branches, CDC Library serves CDC employees across the nation as well as those located internationally.  This tour will will be led by CDC librarian Rick Colbert and will include an overview of library operations, acquisitions, and services.

We think that one of the most valuable skills a librarian can have is the ability to speak in front of an audience, whether it’s because they are presenting at a conference or work meeting, or teaching a library instruction class. Join us as we gain some valuable insights about public speaking and overcoming that fear of presenting. Speakers:

Casey Long, User Education Librarian at Agnes Scott College, is noted for her success as an instructor, so most will probably be surprised to know that when she started working in Academic libraries at Georgia State University her supervisor had to push her into the classroom.  She went on to win awards for excellence in teaching at Georgia State University and was even named as a Library Journal Mover and Shaker in 2009 for her teaching techniques. In this presentation Casey will share her tricks for overcoming stage fright in the classroom.

David Minchew is a relatively new librarian, having received his MLS from the University of North Texas in 2010. His current position as Reference and Instruction Librarian at Georgia Gwinnett College involves a great deal of classroom teaching. He thinks that’s fun. He has also spent the last 35 years climbing on stages all around the place with various rock bands and singers as a lead guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He thinks that’s fun too. Does this make you think; “So what? I’m a total introvert. I could never speak in public or get on a stage. Introverts like me can’t do that.” If so, David thinks that you are wrong. Did you know that the difference between introversion and extroversion has nothing to do with “shyness” but is really about how we process information? Did you know that almost all professional performers are introverts? Does this sound interesting? David hopes so, because that is what he wants to speak with you about, the myth that introverts can’t “bring it.”

Atlanta Emerging Librarians Summer Field Trip

On Saturday, July 12^th members of the Georgia chapter of SLA (Special Libraries Association) and the GLA group Atlanta Emerging Librarians (AEL) had the opportunity to tour a couple of special libraries in Atlanta. The first tour was of the Jimmy Carter Library, led by archivists Brittany Paris and Ceri McCarron. Tour participants were presented details about the presidential library, including its history, its exclusion from FOIA laws, and its relationship with the Jimmy Carter Museum. Participants asked lots of great questions about the library’s preservation techniques, treatment of sensitive materials, and the history of the name “presidential library” vs. archives (it was thought that the word “library” would be more recognizable by the public). After the presentation, Brittany and Ceri led the group to some of the library’s archives and showed us examples of some correspondence within their collection, such as letters between John Wayne and Jimmy Carter.

After the tour, SLA and GLA members had a networking lunch in the CNN building’s food court and gathered to take a tour of the CNN library led by reference librarian Lindsey Knight. Many of the fascinating things the tour participants learned we aren’t able to share due to confidentiality issues, but the group was privileged to learn more about CNN’s long history of prioritizing the existence of a company library and about the kinds of reference questions someone working as a news librarian encounters.

Tour participants gave lots of great feedback about the tours and expressed interest in participating in future tour events. Atlanta Emerging Librarians Summer Field Trip - Sign up by July 10, 2014

This summer, SLA Georgia and Atlanta Emerging Librarians (AEL) have collaborated to organize tours of two Atlanta special libraries, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Museum and the CNN Library & Archives. The tours will take place on Saturday, July 12. With the Carter Library tour limited to 20 and the CNN Library tour limited to 30, we can only offer this free field trip to members of either group and the deadline for sign-up is July 10th at noon.
