GLA Scholarship Winners 2014

The GLA scholarship committee is pleased to announce the 2014 winners of the Beard and Hubbard scholarships.  These two awards are given annually by GLA to provide financial assistance for students pursuing a master’s degree in library and information science.

This year’s C. S. Hubbard scholarship winner is Ann Marie Davis.  Ann is originally from Jackson, Georgia and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in anthropology from Berry College. She worked in the Berry College Memorial Library all four years of college which lead to a career path in librarianship. Ann will complete her Master of Information Science degree at the University of Tennessee in the Fall semester of 2014. She currently lives in Snellville, Georgia with her husband and works full time at Georgia State University Library as the Stacks Supervisor. Ann aspires to work as an academic librarian in cataloging or technical services. 

Michael Kennedy is this year’s Charles Beard Scholarship winner. He is an honor graduate from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. For the past two years, he has worked in the Lee County Public Library System in Leesburg, Georgia as a Library Assistant. His professional passions include adult programming, community outreach, literary research, and collection development and marketing. He desires to take on leadership roles in a public library and further his experience with information literacy. He is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science degree from Valdosta State University, and looks forward to bringing emerging and cutting edge ideas in librarianship to South Georgia and other rural areas.

2014 GLA Paraprofessional Grants - Apply by July 1, 2014

The Paraprofessional Division of the Georgia Library Association announces its 2014 Paraprofessional Grants.   Four (4) $250 Award Grants will be given to the winners to facilitate their attendance at GaCOMO 2014 – GLA’s Annual Convention to be held in Augusta, Georgia October 1-3, 2014.  In addition, each winner will receive an awards plaque, which will be presented at a GLA Association function and a one-year free paraprofessional membership in the Georgia Library Association.

Please note that while applicants do not have to be member of the association in order to compete, they must be full-time employees in a library falling under GLA’s auspices (normally a college-level academic, public, school, or special library).  The deadline for submission of application forms is Monday, July 1, 2014.

Georgia Library Association Scholarship Committee invites applications for 2014

The Georgia Library Association awards two scholarships annually to students completing a master's degree in library science. The Hubbard Scholarship, a $3,000 award, is intended to recruit excellent candidates for librarianship in Georgia and defray some of the costs of their education. The Beard Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, is targeted for applicants of excellence who show strong potential for leadership in the library profession. Recipients of both awards must agree to work for at least one year in Georgia following graduation. Applicants need not be residents of Georgia to apply.

The deadline to apply for the 2014 scholarships is May 21.

Call for 2014 GLA Awards Nominations

The Georgia Library Association Awards Committee invites all local librarians to nominate their colleagues, co-workers, partners, and other library supporters for the 2014 GLA awards.  GLA has awards to celebrate a variety of library and non-library personal for their contributions to the state organization and/or their local library.  Nominating someone is easy (just 10 fields on a form and a heartfelt letter), but the reward of recognition and gratitude for good deeds is endless.

GLMA and GLA invite applications for 2013 Exemplary Library Awards

In 2013, the Georgia Library Media Association (GLMA) and the Georgia Library Association (GLA) will recognize and honor three exemplary and three exceptional library media programs.

In order to identify and highlight these programs, GLMA and GLA are soliciting applications from schools. Library media programs in three schools (elementary, middle and high) will be selected for this recognition. Library media specialists throughout the state and GLMA and GLA will select the recipients based on the school's written application, letters of support, a possible telephone interview and/ or an on-site visit. This program is an opportunity to describe how the Library media program is meeting school improvement goals and increasing student achievement.

Call for Nominations for the John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award

The John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award honors intellectual freedom fighters in and outside the library profession who have demonstrated remarkable personal courage in resisting censorship. The award consists of $500 and a citation. Individuals, a group of individuals or an organization are eligible for the award.

Sponsor and Deadline

The John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award is sponsored by the Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) of the American Library Association (ALA). The deadline for nominations is February 17, 2013.

Nominations

Established in 1979, upon the death of John Phillip Immroth, this award honors the courage, dedication, and contribution of a living individual or group who has set the finest kind of example for the defense and furtherance of the principles of intellectual freedom. The award consists of a citation and a $500 prize.

John Phillip Immroth was a teacher, author, scholar, advocate, and defender of First Amendment rights. He was the founder and first Chair of the Intellectual Freedom Round Table in 1976. His impact on the ideal of intellectual freedom and its practice was great.
