Collaborative (CGLC) meet-up!

The librarians and staff at Savannah State University's Asa H. Gordon
Library will be hosting the winter CGLC meet-up on Thursday, March 9, 2017,
from 3-5pm.

This meet-up is open to all library staff and is an opportunity
to meet fellow library professionals in an informal setting and learn more
about getting involved in GLA. A tour of the Asa H. Gordon Library will be
provided, including Special Collections, as well as information from library staff regarding recent
initiatives.

Meeting in Macon about LIS research and library assessment

The Research and Assessment Interest Group (RAIG) will be gathering for a half-day meeting on March 9th. We would like to extend an invitation to other GLA members who are interested in LIS research and/or library assessment.

The meeting will be held from 10:30am-2:30pm with check-in starting at 10:00am.

The physical meeting will be at the Middle Georgia State University, Macon Campus Library.

The goal of the meeting is to offer time, space, and a loose structure of activities to foster knowledge-sharing and spark collaborations.
Our opening session will be Avoiding Research Pitfalls, presented by Dr. Michael Gibbons, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Middle Georgia State University. Dr. Gibbons is Director of MGA's Center for Applied Research and Education and Interim Director of MGA's Office of Institutional Research.

GLA Library Day @ the Capitol - 2/21/2017

Each year, the Georgia Library Association presents our legislators with a print that highlights a Georgia location, created by pointillist artist Debi Davis. A big thank you to Mumford Books, which generously sponsors this project.

This year, we'll be delivering one print to the office of each elected official on Tuesday, February 21st. It's another chance to talk libraries at the Capitol.

There are two locations with offices: the Capitol and the Coverdell building across the street. In addition to the 236 representatives and senators, there are other officers in the Capitol (Secretary of State, Secretary of the Senate, the Governor's Office, etc.) who will also be getting prints. We need your help!

About the Presenter:
Sarah Steiner is the head of Research & Instruction Services at Western Carolina University in North Carolina. Previously she was a librarian at Georgia State University in Atlanta. While in Georgia, she held many offices with the Georgia Library Association, co-founded the Carterette Webinars, and co-founded the Atlanta Emerging Librarians group. She serves on the editorial board of College & Research Libraries and formerly served as the associate editor and peer-review coordinator of Georgia Library Quarterly. She’s published articles in peer-reviewed and trade publications and written and co-edited three scholarly books with ACRL and ALA TechSource.

Ogeechee Technical College Library in the Spotlight!

Ogeechee Technical College (OTC) is a unit of the Technical College System of Georgia serving Bulloch, Evans, Screven, and surrounding counties. Established in 1986, Ogeechee Technical College is a public institution of higher education that contributes to the economic, educational, and personal growth of the individual and the communities it serves. It offers over 120 programs in business, health, industrial/natural resources, and personal/public health. The total enrollment for AY 16 was 2,872 and the College employs 160 full-time, and numerous part-time, employees.

In our library, we offer our students a warm welcome,  61 computers, printing of assignments, over 8,000 books, over 40,000 items on Galileo, 36 magazine subscriptions, assistance with technology, and research classes.  However, as more and more students are doing research at home and reading from a computer, it is challenging to maintain consistent use of our small library. 

Librarians decided that teaching research skills to various classes was not going to be enough.   We sent e-mails to instructors and asked for suggested events the library could host to enhance their curriculum.  One faculty member responded that she would like to get her Early Childhood Education students involved in  book character activities, so we planned a pumpkin character-making activity.  A local store donated the pumpkins and gourds, and the library supplied the paint. It was such an inspiration to watch college students be creative.  Once the pumpkins were painted, we displayed them in the library and later took them to a local nursing home to be used as decorations for their fall festival.  Many of those same students return regularly to the library to work on homework or to simply say "hello".  In March we are planning our first faculty, alumni, and student Quiz Bowl Challenge.
