GLA Membership Contest: Bring a Friend to COMO!

The GLA Membership Committee is hosting a "Bring a Friend to COMO" Membership Drive Contest in August. 

For every member that you refer throughout the month of August, both you and the new member will be entered into a drawing for a free registration to this year's COMO in October! The more people you refer, the more chances you'll have to win.

How to enter:

Refer a new member and have them join GLA at any membershipo level!

Now is a great time to invite others to join GLA to be part of library association that is currently 741 members strong from every type of library in the state. All library employees, friends, trustees, and supporters are welcome to join GLA.

Savannah Area Librarians Meet-up - August 11, 2016

The Georgia Library Association's Savannah Area Meet-up group is excited to announce our third meet-up.  It will be hosted by Live Oak Public Libraries.

If you are near Chatham, Bryan, Bullock, Effingham, Liberty, McIntosh counties, this is for you!

This meet-up is opened to all library staff (librarians, media specialists, media clerks, etc.) and is an opportunity to meet fellow library professionals in an informal setting and learn more about getting involved in GLA.

The guest speaker for this event will be Clinton Edminster.  Clinton is the Executive Director, Art Rise Savannah, INC, and Owner and Founder, of Starlandia Creative Supply, LLC.  He will be speaking about the arts as a tool to bridge communities together and the power of collaborative thinking for higher impact programming and simply having a better time in your own life.

Bio: Originally from Homer, Alaska, Clinton came to Savannah to study at the art college in 2009. After deciding that college was not for him, he started volunteering with Desotorow Gallery. Eventually becoming the Executive Director in 2013, Edminster began implementing a two-year strategy to transform the small organization into Art Rise Savannah. In June 2015, Edminster opened Starlandia Creative Supply on Bull Street, a new and used art supply store. Edminster is also the President of Star Council, a graduate of the Georgia Center for Nonprofits Momentum Program, a recipient of Savannah Magazine’s Generation Next Award, and a proud resident of the Starland District.

Second GLA Savannah Area Meet-up - March 14, 2016

The librarians and staff at Armstrong State University's Lane Library look forward to hosting the 2nd GLA meet-up on Monday, March 14, 2016, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Learning Commons, the newest library space on campus.

This meet-up is for to all library staff and is an opportunity to meet fellow library professionals in an informal setting and learn more about getting involved in GLA.

From our last meeting it is clear we are a diverse group, but chances are that book displays are something we all do...so why not share ideas?   There are plenty of display screens in the Learning Commons so we will all have a chance to mingle, munch, and muse as we admire each others' inspiration and creativity!

Please send pictures of your display(s) (in digital format) to Caroline Hopkinson by March 9th.  Include any information about purpose, audience, or success of display that you want to share!  Email caroline.hopkinson@armstrong.edu and include GLA display in the subject line. 



About the meeting place:
The Learning Commons provides access to cutting edge technology and group study space in an environment designed to enhance and encourage collaborative learning.  Each year, Library Journal recognizes the most outstanding library building projects from around the country. In 2013 building projects were selected for qualities critical to all-purpose spaces that "by virtue of their vision and design," provide "something for everyone." Armstrong's Learning Commons was one of 14 academic libraries chosen for this honor.  Learning Commons Librarian Aimée Reist will be available to talk to interested attendees about the technology, green design, and how students use the space.


Directions and parking:
Traveling on Abercorn Street (Highway 204) enter campus on Arts Drive (the north entrance to campus) and turn right onto Library Drive.  Park in any space on Library Drive or in the parking lot at the end of Library Drive.  Signs will direct you to the Learning Commons.

RSVP to Judith Garrison at judith.garrison@armstrong.edu for munchies and parking!  She may have to send out parking passes to everyone who RSVP to comply fully with their campus police.

New to GLA: Informal Meetups in YOUR Area!

Are you interested in meeting new people in the library profession?
Do you want to see more GLA events in your city?
Do you enjoy discussing the finer points of library work over coffee?

If you answered yes to these questions, please consider coordinating an informal meetup in your area. In an effort to expand the impact of GLA throughout all of Georgia, the Membership Committee is asking for volunteers to organize casual meetup groups across the state. Participants can mix and mingle, talk about specific topics of interest, and enjoy getting to know other GLA members in their local area. As a volunteer meetup coordinator, you can make this happen!

Volunteers will organize the place and time for the meetup, along with any specific topics to be discussed (optional). They'll also send out information about the meetup to the GLA Listserv and coordinate any necessary reservations and accommodations for the group at the meetup location.
