Georgia Libraries 2017 Conference

October 4-6, 2017

The Academic Library Division of the Georgia Library Association/Georgia Chapter of ACRL invites Georgia librarians and library science students to submit research papers pertaining to academic libraries for presentation at 2017 Georgia Libraries Conference. Criteria for selection include purpose, content, organization, scholarship, and references. Papers should include research on developments in academic libraries that present challenging opportunities for libraries and librarianship throughout the state, region, or nation. Papers should be approximately 2000 words.

The Georgia Library Quarterly (GLQ) may invite selected authors to submit their papers for possible publication in GLQ.

GLA will award a cash prize for the paper selected as the top entry and complimentary Georgia Library conference registration for the second and third entry. The three top papers will be presented at the Georgia Libraries Conference in Columbus, GA.

Notice of Intention:
Submit via email a notice of intent and a brief abstract. Send emails with the subject line “ALD Research Papers” to jennifer.townes@gcsu.edu. Your notice of intent should contain your name, address, phone number, email address, a tentative title, and a brief (200 word) abstract by April 3, 2017.

If you want your paper reviewed by scholarly writing expert prior to the final submission, e-mail it to jennifer.townes@gcsu.edu by June 1, 2017.

Paper Submission:
The final paper (approximately 2000 words) must be submitted by July 17, 2017.
Use the Chicago Manual of Style as the style guide for the submission. Use author/date format with a reference section at the end.

Criteria for selection include purpose, content, organization, scholarship, and references. Papers should include research on developments in academic libraries that present challenging opportunities for libraries and librarianship throughout the state, region, or nation. Papers should be approximately 2000 words.

The Georgia Library Quarterly (GLQ) may invite selected authors to submit their papers for possible publication in GLQ.

Helpful Sources for Writing an Academic Paper

For those contemplating writing an academic paper, numerous print resources are available that can assist with the process. Books targeted for librarians include ALA’s Writing and Publishing: the Librarian's Handbook and Handbook of Academic Writing for Librarians by Christopher Vance Hollister.

Also, the following titles are recommended because they help with establishing structure for any writing project, and answer many questions about the scholarly writing process.

Belcher, Wendy L. (2009). Writing your journal article in 12 weeks: A guide to academic publishing success. Belcher is helpful in specifying the components and styles unique to different disciplines. The book gives guidance on sticking to a writing schedule and keeping you on track.

Bishop-Clark, C and Dietz-Uhler, B. (2012). Engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: A Guide to the Process, and How to Develop a Project from Start to Finish. This book describes creating a project, then gathering and analyzing the data. Authors do a wonderful job of differentiating between qualitative and quantitative research in plain English.

Writing an Academic Paper using Library Issues

Who can do it?  If you have any interest in anything related to libraries you can write and submit a research paper.  Writers may be librarians, paraprofessional staff, faculty, students….

What is it? Writing a research paper about libraries uses the same process as writing any other scholarly article. You tackle a problem or issue. Once an issue is identified, read scholarly articles by others who have written about this issue. Create a hypothesis. Use a study or some way to gather data that will test your hypothesis. Examine the gathered data and analyze its implications to generate additional understanding about this issue.  State your conclusion.

Where is it? Papers submitted for the Georgia Library Association’s Academic Library Division call for research papers will be read at the next COMO conference in Athens, GA.  Additionally, submitted papers may be invited for publication in the Georgia Library Quarterly, a peer reviewed journal. Furthermore, academic papers using library topics may be published in any scholarly journal, and are not limited to publications devoted to libraries.

Why do it? Writing an academic paper benefits everyone in that it expands our understanding of our workplace and profession.  Listing published documents demonstrates an added level of professionalism on anyone’s vita or resume. While writing can be challenging, completing an article is rewarding, and publishing a piece is exciting.

Criteria for selection include purpose, content, organization, scholarship, and references.  Papers should include research on developments in academic libraries that present challenging opportunities for libraries and librarianship throughout the state, region, or nation. Papers should be approximately 2000 words and appropriate papers may be considered for publication in the Georgia Library Quarterly.

Cash awards funded by YBP Library Services and EBSCO for the top two judged papers will be presented at the conference.

Academic Division: Call for Papers, COMO 2013

The Academic Library Division of the Georgia Library Association/Georgia Chapter of ACRL invites Georgia librarians and library science students to submit research papers for presentation at 2013 COMO pertaining to academic libraries. Criteria for selection include purpose, content, organization, scholarship, and references. Cash awards funded by YBP Library Services and EBSCO for the top two judged papers will be presented at the Academic Library Division luncheon on Thursday, October 10th. Accepted papers will be delivered in person during a scheduled session at COMO.

Papers should include research on developments in academic libraries that present challenging opportunities for libraries and librarianship throughout the state, region, or nation. Papers should be approximately 2000 words, presentations are scheduled for 15 minutes, and appropriate papers may be considered for publication in the Georgia Library Quarterly.

GLA/SELA Call for Academic Papers

 The Academic Library Division of the Georgia Library Association/Georgia Chapter of ACRL invites Georgia and Southeastern (SELA) academic librarians to submit papers for presentation at the 2012 Georgia Council of Media Organizations’ Conference.  Accepted papers are to be delivered in person at the scheduled session.  Cash awards funded by Yankee Book and by EBSCO for the top two judged papers will be presented at the Academic Library Division luncheon.

Academic Library Division Call for Papers - COMO 2010

The Academic Library Division of the Georgia Library Association/Georgia Chapter of ACRL invites Georgia’s academic librarians to submit papers for presentation at the 2010 Georgia Council of Media Organizations’ Conference, COMO XXII. Accepted papers are to be delivered in person at the scheduled session. This will be the fifteenth year that there will be cash awards for the two papers judged best of those submitted. The two awards – one funded by Blackwell’s Book Services and one by EBSCO – will be presented at the Academic Library Division luncheon.
