GLA Library Day @ the Capitol - 2/21/2017

Each year, the Georgia Library Association presents our legislators with a print that highlights a Georgia location, created by pointillist artist Debi Davis. A big thank you to Mumford Books, which generously sponsors this project.

This year, we'll be delivering one print to the office of each elected official on Tuesday, February 21st. It's another chance to talk libraries at the Capitol.

There are two locations with offices: the Capitol and the Coverdell building across the street. In addition to the 236 representatives and senators, there are other officers in the Capitol (Secretary of State, Secretary of the Senate, the Governor's Office, etc.) who will also be getting prints. We need your help!

Tuesday, February 21st:
We'll be meeting at 10:30 am that morning, and hope to be done by noon! If you're able to help out, please contact Wendy Cornelisen at wcornelisen@georgialibraries.org

GLA Library Day at the Capitol Call for Volunteers

Each year, the Georgia Library Association presents our legislators with a Debi Davis print. A big thank you to Mumford Books, which generously sponsors this project.
This year, we'll be delivering one print for each elected official and small candy bag for each staff member on Tuesday, February 16th. It's another chance to talk libraries at the Gold Dome. There are two locations with offices: the Capitol and the Coverdell building across the street. In addition to the 236 representatives and senators, there are other officers in the Capitol (Secretary of State, Secretary of the Senate, the Governor's Office, etc.) who will also be getting prints. We need your help:
Monday, February 15:
Creating the candy bags to give staff members. Each office has at least 1 staff member; some have more. We'll need at least 500 bags. The more the merrier! Drop by from 4-7 pm at the GPLS office at 1800 Century Place NE, Suite 150.
Tuesday, February 16:
We need a minimum of 4 people: 2 for the Coverdell building, one for the Capitol, and one to stay with the prints in the hallway. It would go a lot faster with 10 or 15 people! Meeting at 10:30 am at the Capitol.
If you'd like to volunteer for one (or both!) of these events please fill out this form: http://goo.gl/forms/xZQ7X3FD5e

GLA Library Legislative Day 2014

The General Assembly is operating at lightning speed so far this year. After consulting with several past and present GLA officers, it was deemed unfeasible for GLA to assemble a group to meet in person with our Georgia legislators this year. Julie Walker is chair of the GLA Governmental Relations Committee and has had lots of experience working with the General Assembly members in various venues.  For this year we ask you to contact your state senators and representatives individually. Julie will then work during this year with the rest of the Governmental Relations Committee to get a jump-start on planning for GLA Library Legislative Day 2015.

So...for 2014, we would like for GLA members to ask the Georgia General Assembly for a little Valentine's love for libraries.  On February 13, 2014, we encourage every member of GLA to contact your state representatives and senators - via telephone, email or U. S. Mail - to bring libraries to their attention, and to encourage support for library programs and services.

Here are some documents to help you:
  • A letter you can use as a model if you wish.

AND:  In case you have either forgotten your district(s), or have been subject to redistricting, here is a link to the Secretary of State's Office "My voter page."
By inserting your own information, you can see a copy of your own voter registration card, with your districts listed on the lower right hand side to match to your legislator's address.

THANK YOU, everyone, for taking a few moments to communicate the importance of our libraries to Georgia on February 13!

Susan Morris, GLA President 2014
Julie Walker, Governmental Relations Committee Chair

Georgia Library Day

Additional information and directions for Georgia Library Day are now available.

A message from Carol, the GLA President:

I’ve had a suggestion that we wear the same color for identification. How about RED?! I know we don’t have time to get this message out, but for those who want to, please wear red. Red scarf and red ties will do!
